How the calculation works
Each challenge maps to a waste factor (expressed as a % of total capacity) derived from published research — including DORA, Standish CHAOS, McKinsey, Stack Overflow, and Team Topologies. Because waste categories overlap in practice, the calculator uses the Root Mean Square (RMS) method to combine them without double-counting. This ensures the total opportunity is always realistic — even at worst-case inputs, the model caps at ~85% of capacity. Hourly rates are fully-loaded (salary + employer NI, pension & overheads) sourced from ONS ASHE 2025 and sector salary guides.
